Rhino Beetle Illustration

I was thinking about a recent Fresh Air episode on dung beetles, that included a discussion of rhino beetles, and it got me to thinking that I should design a creature based on one, why not right?

This was a lot of fun to do in Photoshop, I played around with some new techniques and textures, layering lots of brush strokes and creating the finished form by erasing into the initial simplified shapes I had created, like carving the drawing out of a larger block as a sculptor of stone might. I made the head piece armor in a separate layer from the body and played around with it being a much different color but ultimately unified it by copy and pasting the effects layers I had applied to the body, lots of fine tuning was needed but I'm ultimately happy with the look of the thing.

Craving

Played around with some new techniques for this one. I drew the girl on paper, took a photo, then cleaned it up in photoshop. Not perfect, but fun to do. I tried to give her eyes a look of craving to fit this weeks Illustration Friday theme.

Hope you like it!

Back to Square 1

I'm playing with a new style, so far sticking with a square format for composition and exploring within that space with texture and contrast. It's nice to not worry about character or content and just get back to exploring pure composition.
